Who are required to successfully complete the Reading Add-on Endorsement?

Any teacher teaching a reading course at the secondary level will be required to have either the K-12 reading endorsement or K-12 reading certification.  Additionally, any teacher teaching elementary reading courses must have one of the following qualifications: K-12 reading endorsement, K-12 reading certification, or elementary education certification.

Reading Endorsement Competency 1 course description: Participants will develop an understanding of reading as a process of student engagement in both fluent decoding of words and construction of meaning. This 60-hour online training will provide substantive knowledge of language structure and function, as well as cognition for each of the five major components of the reading process. This training meets the requirements for Competency 1 of the Reading Endorsement Add-on Certification Program.

Confirm District Acceptance for credit in advance: The Florida Department of Education will not accept these courses if they are submitted by an individual for recertification or endorsement.  They must be submitted through a district.  Participants are responsible for following their district’s requirements to obtain in-service credit and endorsement as part of their approved Master In-service Plan.  If you are unsure if your district will accept these courses, you should check with your district Staff Development office.

This is a self-paced, facilitated course.  The average time to complete a 60 hour course is 12 weeks but the courses are self-paced so you can choose to finish quicker than the 12 weeks or can choose to take a little longer if needed as long as the coursework is finished by the course closing date.

Banking of credits: Credits for this course may be “banked” if they put you over the required 120 hours (6 credits) for recertification.

Registration: Registration dates are listed on the following page: Reading Endorsement
