2016-2017 ESOL Category 1 Endorsement Online Courses Schedule

Each of these 5 (60 hour) courses satisfy the Florida Department of Education’s ESOL training requirements for Category I (Primary Language Arts/ English) teachers who need 300 hours of ESOL. All 5 courses are required for ESOL Endorsement. This series of courses provides meaningful and authentic material, access to a variety of research-based best practices, mentoring by our state’s experts, and practical application for increased student performance.

Note: For acceptance of credit for these courses in states other than Florida, check with your district or state certification office.

Each ESOL endorsement course is 8 weeks long. The courses offer flexibility to work at your convenience during the 8 weeks, are completely online, and require no face-to-face meetings or specific dates/times required to be online.

ESOL Endorsement Courses can be taken in any order.

  1. ESOL Category 1: Applied Linguistics (60 hours) – Provides educators with the skills needed to acquire a deeper understanding of the structure of English from a modern day linguistic perspective. Enables the educator to analyze the structure of English to contrast with the language(s) of the target population in a given class. Participants learn how to adapt classroom instructional practices to meet the linguistic needs of their English language learners.

ESOL Category 1 Applied Linguistics Registration Dates: 7/8/16 – 8/18/16 and Course Dates: 8/22/16 – 10/16/16

  1. ESOL Category 1: Curriculum and Materials (60 hours) – Developed to enable educators to select appropriate instructional materials to support the unique needs of English language learners. Educators will be able to determine which materials are effective for the ELL based on his or her communicative skills.

ESOL Category 1 Curriculum and Materials Registration Dates: 9/9/16 – 10/20/16 and Course Dates: 10/24/16 – 12/18/16

  1. ESOL Category 1: Testing and Evaluation (60 hours) – Upon completion of this course, participants will be prepared to appropriately evaluate instructional outcomes while recognizing the effects of the ELL’s language proficiency and culture. Educators will also be able to select and use formal/informal methods of assessment for the ELL in order to make informed decisions about instruction.

ESOL Category 1 Testing and Evaluation Registration Dates: 11/25/16 – 1/5/17 and Course Dates: 1/9/17 – 3/5/17

  1. ESOL Category 1: Cross Cultural Communication (60 hours) – Designed to increase awareness and sensitivity to diverse cultures by highlighting similarities and differences as they relate to language and communication. Participants will learn how to adapt classroom instructional practices to meet the needs of students with varying cultural backgrounds.

ESOL Category 1 Cross Cultural Communication Registration Dates: 2/3/17 – 3/16/17 and Course Dates: 3/20/17 – 5/14/17

  1. ESOL Category 1: Methods of Teaching ESOL (60 hours) – Designed to provide educators with the necessary skills to determine appropriate instructional methods and strategies for teaching English language learners. Educators will use their knowledge of current first and second language acquisition to plan and deliver appropriate, effective instruction.

ESOL Category 1 Methods of Teaching ESOL Registration Dates: 4/21/17 – 6/1/17 and Course Dates: 6/5/17 – 7/30/17

In addition to ESOL Endorsement courses for Category I (Primary Language Arts/English Teachers) educators, the following courses meet the Florida Department of Education’s ESOL requirement for Category II-IV Educators.

For all ESOL Category 2, 3 and 4 self-paced courses registration ends: 6/30/17 and all courses dates are: 7/11/16-9/30/17

ESOL Category II for Teachers (Social Studies, Mathematics, Science and Computer Literacy) – ESOL Basic 60 (60 hours)

ESOL Category III for Teachers (All other subjects not included in Categories I or II) – ESOL Basic 18 (18 hours)

ESOL Category IV for School Administrators (60 hours)

ESOL Category IV for Guidance Counselors (60 hours)
